Why do people seek Jesus? What motivates a person to take the first step toward Christ?

In Matthew 16:13-16, Jesus asked his disciples what the people were saying. Who did they think Jesus was? His disciples supplied answers. Some said he was John the Baptist, some said Elijah, or Jeremiah. Some simply thought he was a prophet. Then Jesus asked his disciples what they thought. Peter had it right. Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God.

Crowds of people gathered to see Jesus every time he stopped to teach and followed him as he walked. Each person had a reason for being there. Friends and neighbors invited them to come and see or they had a personal need. Some were waiting for the Wow factor. They wanted a miracle, or to see demons cast out. Maybe they wanted to see a loaf of bread divided between 5000. Others were desperate to receive a healing. There were those who simply wondered what had attracted so much attention.

Today, we have the gospel accounts. We have the Bible-God's complete story of redemption. People still seek Jesus for many varied reasons. We all have our needs. We still pray for healing. Some of us look for comfort or stability in a world that spins out of control. People tune in to television preachers, visit a church, read books, or talk to religious authorities in an effort to find a purpose in life.

What causes anyone to arrive at the feet of Jesus?

Did they pray to an unknown God, or cry out to the universe for relief from a deep felt need? In every cry, God answers. Did he answer by sending a friend at just the right time? As Christians, we often feel drawn to the side of a friend or acquaintance. We begin to recognize it as a God directed calling. It's our job to introduce Jesus with what we know about him. It may be our place to quietly listen. Or maybe we invite our friend to church.

Just as in biblical times, people still look for Jesus-and for many of the same reasons. And as in the past, when the truth is presented, it calls for a choice. It's rarely a logical decision. It's a bold step to put faith in the One who saves.


I struggle to find a point to this contemplation. Maybe it's understanding.
When I talk to people about my Lord and Savior, may I remember to there is a heart-felt need.

May I remember the crowds who followed Jesus, searched for him for many reasons. They were all in need, but not all recognized him.

It's worth my time to answer the call.
